The last step in a chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcy case is a discharge hearing.  This is where a judge finalizes the estate as settled and releases the debtor of his/her dischargeable debts.  Certain debts like, certain taxes, domestic support debt, fines and penalties owed to the government, student loans and various other debts will not be dischargeable.  It is important to note that the debtor must take the post-bankruptcy financial management course (usually online) and submit proof of this to the court before the case will be dischargeable.

Important things to know about manhattan discharge hearings in New York:

1.  You will not likely need to attend this.  Essentially a judge will do this behind the scenes.

2.  The same is true for Brooklyn.
